Interproximal reduction (IPR) is a procedure used by your orthodontist to help give you the best smile possible! The shape and size of your teeth can have just as much of an impact on your overall smile’s appearance, as the position. Interproximal reduction procedure involves removing a small or very fine amount of outer tooth enamel between two adjacent teeth. It is also sometimes called slenderizing, stripping or enamel reduction.

One of the benefits of IPR is that it helps to create space and improve the alignment of your teeth. It can also improve your overall bite as it helps teeth fit together better and increase stability, so they can stay in their position long term. The procedure can also help improve your teeth’s overall appearance (look smaller, look more uniform, reduce “black triangles” or dark holes created by lack of gum tissue, etc.)

The process can be done in a few different ways. Some ways include hand held stripping devices, stainless steel diamond coated strips or mechanical strip systems. Approximately half to a full millimeter of enamel can be removed, still leaving the tooth in optimal health. Your orthodontist will determine how much is required for the desired result. Teeth can then be polished or smoothed after the procedure. There is usually no discomfort during the process as the reduction is minimal.
