Halloween is a time for scary stories, creepy costumes and of course, candy! For most kids, the sweet treats are the best part of the spooky season. If your child has braces, they might be worried that they’ll have to miss out on some of the festivities. Reassure them that kids undergoing orthodontic treatment can still participate in all the fun!

Caring For Braces This Halloween

The good news is that many Halloween favorites are completely safe to consume with braces! Snacks such as KitKats, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s Kisses and potato chips are safe to consume. Those with braces need to stay away from candy that is very hard, chewy and/or sticky. If these treats aren’t avoided, broken brackets and/or wires could result, which can prolong orthodontic treatment . Oral B has provided some helpful tips for what you can with braces on their website. If you have Invisalign, you can still enjoy your favorite treats, just remember to remove your aligners, keep them in a safe place, and thoroughly clean your mouth before putting the aligners back in.

It’s important to remember that those with braces can be more prone to certain oral problems such as tooth decay and cavities. A sugary snack is the last thing you would want to get stuck in an orthodontic appliance! When indulging in a sweet treat, it’s especially important to follow the proper oral hygiene routine soon after.
