Orthodontic Patients: Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Treatment Plan

The back-to-school season is here and that means students everywhere are starting to get back into their routines. If you let your oral hygiene routine slip over the summer, make sure you get it back on the right track for fall! Remember, those with orthodontic appliances are already more susceptible to cavities, so oral hygiene becomes even more important!

Oral Hygiene Routine For Braces

To be successful, consistency is key. This goes for almost everything in life – including your oral hygiene routine! Make sure you follow these steps every morning and night to ensure your teeth, mouth and orthodontic appliance stay clean:

  • Remove any elastics from your braces before brushing your teeth
  • Give the orthodontic appliance itself special attention when brushing
  • Try to brush each tooth individually
  • Floss at least once a day (preferably at night)
  • Use water or mouthwash to rinse your mouth and help release any food particles
  • Maintain regular check-ups with your orthodontist

Check In On Your Oral Health With An Orthodontist

Even if your smile appears to be happy and healthy on the outside, it’s still a good idea to check in with an orthodontist. In fact, The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that everyone receives a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven. That being said, it’s never too late to take control of your oral health!

The reason why age 7 is the recommended age for an orthodontic visit is because the earlier orthodontic problems are detected, the easier and faster they can be corrected.  An orthodontist can intervene in a child’s oral development with orthodontic appliances. At an early age, this can help to ensure the proper growth and alignment of jaws and permanent teeth.
