Whether it’s for you or a loved one, it’s important to know when to act if you feel there is an emergency. Common Problems
Poking wires are the worst offender for an orthodontic emergency. No one likes the feeling of something sharp in their mouth, and we don’t want you to be uncomfortable! If you experience this with your braces, call our office and we will try to get you in as soon as possible to fix the issue.
Another common braces emergency we see is loose or broken brackets. This is when the middle piece of the brace detaches from the tooth, leaving it hanging. Like a poking wire, the best course of action is to reach out to us and schedule a time to come in for further assessment.
What You Can Do At Home
Unless you are experiencing severe pain, some of your problems may be fixed quicker with an at home solution! For poking wires, try finding the piece that is bothering you and put it back in place using tweezers. If this doesn’t work, try putting dental wax on the end of the sharp wire to make it less painful. If you have a loose bracket, try using that same wax to keep it in place until your next visit.
Although these are not permanent solutions, they may help to tie you over until we see you next. For those experiencing minor pain from adjustments, we recommend an over the counter anti inflammatory to help subdue the discomfort until it eases.
