The teen years are an exciting time in your child’s life. They’re gaining their independence. They’re learning to drive and maybe even looking at colleges. As a parent, you’re wondering where the time went.

And teens certainly have their own opinions about things. (Boy, do they ever!) Even though your teenager needs braces, they refuse to get them. What is a parent to do?

The Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment During the Teen Years

If your teen is refusing braces, they probably have a mild to moderate misalignment. Most teens who have a severe underbite or overbite are often eager to get braces, if just for appearance’s sake.

Explain to your teen that even if their teeth don’t necessarily “look” crooked, a misalignment can lead to more dental problems. Postponing braces puts them at a greater risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and broken teeth. In addition, teeth that don’t align properly can wear down abnormally.

Your teen may not be thinking too far into the future, but remind them that they won’t always be covered by your health insurance. Young adults in their 20s often find themselves underinsured or uninsured. If your teen gets braces now, mom and dad are picking up the tab!

Typically the older a person is, the longer they have to wear braces. Putting off braces often results in a longer treatment time. In other words: Just do it now and be done with it.
