Many people associate orthodontic treatment with teenagers. You don’t have to wait until the teen years to correct your child’s bite and alignment of teeth. Being evaluated for orthodontic treatment early on is important to maintain good oral health.
Orthodontic Evaluations for Children
Some children see us after being referred by their general or pediatric dentist. A referral from a dentist is not necessary to make an appointment. At Windermere Orthodontics, we offer complimentary consultations to all our patients.
Your child should receive an orthodontic evaluation by their 7th birthday or when their permanent molars and incisors have come in, whichever happens first. It is recommended you come in earlier if your child has misaligned or crowded teeth.
Other signs that your child might need braces aren’t so obvious. Mouth breathing, difficulty chewing, cheek biting, teeth grinding, and a protruding or recessed lower jaw are possible signs of needing orthodontic treatment. In addition, thumb sucking or pacifier use after age 4 can push the front teeth forward. This can result in an open bite, a condition where the top and bottom teeth don’t touch when the jaw is closed.
The Benefits of Pediatric Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment results in more than a beautiful smile. Crooked teeth are at risk for wearing down abnormally. Properly aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss, which can result in fewer cavities. Having braces also creates more room for incoming permanent teeth, possibly reducing the need for tooth extractions later on.
