The Mara Appliance

How can this appliance benefit you?

The MARA (Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance) is a functional appliance used to correct an overbite or the extra distance some patients have between their top and bottom front teeth due to the lower jaw being set back/underdeveloped. The MARA will also improve the overall look of your child’s smile and facial profile by bringing the chin forward.

The MARA is glued to the patient’s molars and is worn 24 hours a day. The length of time to wear the device can depend on each patient, the average length of wear being approximately 12-14 months. The MARA works best during a patient’s growth peak, so being under the care of an orthodontist is critical so that your child’s treatment is started at the proper time.

It takes a week or so to get used to the appliance. Patients should try to stick to soft foods to help the muscles adjust to this new device. It is also important to avoid sticky or hard foods as they can loosen the appliance which will affect its purpose.

Please contact Windermere Orthodontics at (770) 888-1929 to find out more information about the MARA.
