We hear about different types of chemicals or unnecessary things in our water supply. One particular and natural element, which is actually very helpful, is known as fluoride.

Drinking water with fluoride has its benefits. It strengthens tooth enamel and can prevent tooth decay. Studies have shown that in community water systems with fluoride, the incidence of tooth decay in children and adults is decreased by at least 25%. Even with the abundance of access to fluoride today (fluoride toothpaste and other sources), the fluoride in our water makes an impact!

Fluoride is a natural element found in present groundwater and oceans. Its natural properties are ones we should take advantage of. Water fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride to a recommended level which can help prevent tooth decay. Similar to how we see foods in the grocery store with added vitamins (i.e Milk with Vitamin D, Orange Juice with Calcium etc.).

Fluoride in your water can also save you money. The average lifetime cost of adding fluoride to your water supply is less than the cost of a dental filling. For most cities or areas, $1 invested in fluoridation of water saves $38 in dental treatment costs.

Another important note on fluoridation is that it’s both safe and effective. More than 100 health organizations recognize the health benefits associated with water fluoridation. This includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association, American Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association and the World Health Organization.
